ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Hen Aelwyd, old hearth of home, is a three-look collection by knitwear designer and winner of the L’Oréal Professionnel award, Alice Morell Evans.
Inspired by her distorted memories, Morell Evans’ garments celebrate the craft and wassailing traditions of South Wales, where growing up she spent summers with her grandparents. e collection draws on the havoc of Mari Lwyd, the grey mare, a call and response tradition in which a horse skull covered in ribbons and bells parades around town arguing with locals until they allow Mari Lwyd to enter the comfort of their homes for a party.
A similar chaos ensued when Morell Evans’ grandparents moved away from Fishguard, South Wales, their furniture and belongings removed from the context of the house and home in which Morell Evans had found a haven. A celebration of craft and tradition, the collection draws on the havoc of the wassailing tradition of Mari Lwyd, in which a horse skull covered in ribbons and bells enters the homes of locals for a party.
