ABOUT
Karina Bondareva graduated from Central Saint Martins this summer with a L’oreal prize winning collection entitled ‘A love letter to the working hands of Savile Row’. Having spent her placement year at Gieves & Hawkes she became obsessed with the craftsmanship of the devoted tailors. Learning traditional techniques including pad stitching and military embroidery and decided to dedicate her debut work to their mastery.
Lockdown was a pivotal point for Bondareva. She participated in, and be- came one of the winners of, Vogue’s Met Gala Challenge, recreating Thom Browne’s iconic gown for Cardi b out of just 500 sheets of A4 red paper in a week. Her work went viral bringing her international recognition and using this as fuel to her creative fire, she decided to use equally challenging materials for her graduate work. Over 32,000 matchsticks were individually crafted together into delicate chrysanthemums and embellished onto metres of intricate textiles, whilst cascades of hand made clay buttons in bursts of colours adorned 100 black lame fins on a shouldered dress.
After graduating from CSM with a first, the sarabande scholar felt motivated to expand on her work, demonstrating her broad range of skills to create additional intricately crafted pieces, to form a full 10 look ready to wear collection which she will present to press and buyers during London fashion week this September. Bondarevas work is a form of hedonistic architecture- structurally elaborate statement pieces which seek to puzzle, challenge the imagination, and bring the wearer pleasure.
